Large Flaked Hide Scraper
Large Flaked Hide Scraper

This big old hide scraper was fashioned out of a piece of river cobble slate. A portion of the original stone did not need to be flaked in order to satisfy the maker. He probably figured to leave well enough alone with this thin and hard to work material.

Nice Full Grooved Axe
Nice Full Grooved Axe

Here is a great little axe that is very well made. Much of the pecking is still visable where there wasn’t a lot polish near the groove area. The bit still holds a nice polish and has some dulling from normal use. This is a great well made working man’s axe. Nothing fancy.

Here is an amazing find. I still remember my father’s excitement as he showed it to me proudly declaring that my uncle had “walked right over it”. They were looking for arrowheads together in Ohio when my dad saw it in my uncles row of beans and of course the younger brother never let him hear the end of that. It apears to me that the head and ears were shaped by pecking and polishing. Then eyes were carved into the head. I’m not sure of exactly what it is except really cool. It remains highly polished with heavy patina. There may also be some Red Ochre staining on the back.

Bakers Creek

This is an unusual point in that it is made from the outer rind of a flint nodule. It still has the curviture of the outer nodule. On the other side you can see the actual flint and the middle of the pouint is the flat area of the original chip with the percussion waves. The maker didn’t waste anything on this. This point was part of a collection purchased at a farm auction in southern Indiana in the late 1960’s.
